As any crop grower will tell you, growing your own crops is an extremely rewarding effort. But the catch is, it can also mean tedious work and expensive as well. Let’s face it, it costs us money to set up a dedicated garden, purchasing seeds, fertilizers, soil (if you live in an urban area), mulch, numerous gardening tools and more. The big question to most of us is that, does it make financial sense to grow your own crops, or you’re better off purchasing crops off the grocery stores or local food market? The answer to all our questions depends on how we plan our gardening efforts base on our needs and consumption in the long term.

If you’re looking to start a garden, well what you need to do or where do you start. I was out just getting our garden all set this year and I thought I would kind of talk some of the stuff you need if you’re just getting into gardening or its been a long time since you’ve had a garden and you want to get started whether you’re in a country setting, a suburban setting, an apartment, or where ever you are and you’d like to just learn to start and there’s so many ways to garden, whether you have smaller or large spaces for those container gardening, raised bed gardening, traditional gardening, or have a combination of those all.

So where do you start? The first thing you need to figure out when you’re looking to start a new garden is where are you going to put it. You need to pay attention to your yard and especially pay attention to where you get the most amount of sunlight, generally most of your crops that you’re going to grow are going to do well in full sun, some crops like leafy greens and other things are going to do ok and part shade also but generally everything will do pretty good in full sun with very few exceptions. So there are actually a few different apps that you can get for android or iPhone that you can use to track the sun path during different times of the year so even if you’re planning your garden out in the winter time, you can use the app to set it to lets say July and figure out exactly where the path of sun is gonna be in your yard. You want to use that to figure out where you’re gonna get the best amount of sunlight once you have a place picked out in your yard and you’re ready to get started.

You need to figure out what your gonna grow, now generally people especially new gardeners want to go to the seed store and look at all these great seeds on the rack or whatever at home depot or ace hardware and you’re gonna want to just pick a whole bunch of stuff and say, ohh that looks good, ohh I want to try that, I want to try those, there is nothing wrong to try new things but i would encourage you stay focused on the things you eat the most and the things you can preserve. Pay attention to what your family is using the most, so if you guys have salad everyday, you want to grow salad greens and so on, just make sure that the core of what you’re growing is the things you’re going to use. there nothing worst than planting a garden, weeding, taking care of it and then not really wanting to really eat half of the stuff you grew when it comes to August or September.
