Why Gardening?

W ith the ever-changing economic condition and increase interest in organic & sustainable living, many people are turning to vegetable gardening as a supplement to their family’s diet. Whether you are interested in gardening as a hobby or choose to grow fruits and vegetables to reduce the family food budget each month, you have the freedom to grow what you want and experiment as much as you like in your garden plot.

To understand gardening as a hobby it is important to realize that:

  • There is minimal cost involved. The average cost to start a backyard garden can easily be under $100.
  • It can be labor-intensive, but that is where the fun begins.
  • Any garden takes some time and patience to grow.

Where to Begin:

No experience necessary!

You can start out on a small scale, choosing to start your garden in your backyard, on your deck/patio, from the ground (earth), or in pots or planters to avoid the usual mistakes that most successful gardeners will make from time to time.

Not sure what to grow and harvest? Here are some suggestions:

HERBS: cilantro, parsley, mint, oregano, basil, thyme, rosemary

FRUITS: blueberries, strawberries, melons

VEGETABLES: potatoes, sweet potatoes, cucumbers, squash, carrots, peppers, onions, green beans, kale, collard, mustard & turnip greens
